Library with Reading Room

Ramakrishna Mission Public Library being the first and the oldest public service unit of the Ashrama started since 1925 has been serving the general public and students by providing a spacious reading room for all and a separate reading room for girl students.

The entire Annapurna library of Chandra family of Cuttack which was in custody of Bangiya Sahitya Parisad, was donated to the library with 5663 books, 20 Almirahs and 4 book-shelves in 1950. During the period from 1949–54 the Ashrama also undertook the work of translation of books of Sri Ramakrishna, Vivekananda literature in Oriya with a view to infusing the spirit of real patriotism in the heart of the people and placing before them the essence of Hindu religion.

During the period 1952–54 facilities were provided for healthy games for boys of the town to inculcate sportsmanship among them. In 1955 juvenile recreation facility was extended with the construction of a children's section at a cost of Rs. 10,000/- of which the state Govt. contributed a sum of Rs. 6400/- and balance was met by M/s. N.N. Sur and D.N. Sur of Cuttack. Along with the library services, facilities for indoor and out-door games were provided to the juvenile members. In those days it was the only public library in Puri Town that provided the facility of the library and attracted the readers most. For this all the people of the town, irrespective of status and position especially those who have established themselves in society remember the library very much.

Today also many students visit the library to quench the thirst of their knowledge as all the magazines, periodicals, news-papers available are placed on the table of the library for readers. At present, the library provides 6 newspapers and 48 periodicals. The library maintains a book lending section for the readers. The library has a collection of around 27621 books at present. The text book lending section of the library serves the need of a large number of school and college students of the town. During the year total number of attendance 8733.
